On Thursday 27 May, the focus falls on Chardonnay as we celebrate International Chardonnay Day. This green-skinned grape variety originated in the Burgundy region of eastern France but is now grown wherever wine is produced.
The neutrality of the grape lends itself to many different wine styles, with flavours derived from influences such as terroir, oak and climate. In cooler climates, Chardonnay tends to be medium to light bodied with noticeable acidity and flavours of green plum, apple and pear. In warmer climates, the flavours are more citrusy, peachy or melony and in very warm climates it can have tropical notes of banana and mango. Chardonnay is also an important component of many sparkling wines and is the second most widely planted white grape variety worldwide, next only to Airén.
At Lutzville Vineyards, we offer two options to choose from and celebrate International Chardonnay Day with us, each with its own distinct character.
This elegant, unwooded style, selected from two different vineyard sites, shows aromas of yellow apple and white pear with pineapple and creamy textured butterscotch on the palate. The two different macroclimatic expressions curve the way for consumers to enjoy a trendy style, linking both fruity notes with rich creaminess. The wine was awarded gold status by Gilbert & Gaillard. Pair with: Shellfish, creamy vegetable soups, grilled fish, prawn risotto or poultry with herbs and butter. Serve sweet potato and spring vegetables on the side.
A complex wine with aromas of citrus and papaya, backed by hints of vanilla from oak maturation. Also showing very subtle toasty, brioche notes. Full-bodied and intense with restrained elegance and a lingering aftertaste. Pair with: Enjoy with dishes such as grilled, seared or roasted shellfish like lobster and scallops, or roasted chicken with mushrooms and slow roast tomatoes.
